The Mohawk tribes have a strong history of fine basket weaving. This example is by Mary Kawennatakie Adams, (1917-1999) a well-documented basket and textile artist, from Quebec, Canada. Made out of black ash splints, Mary shared the preparation of weaving materials with her brother and children who assisted with the cutting, pounding, cleaning, shaving and braiding of the fiber. Mary taught basket making on the Mohawk Reserve at Akwesasne in Quebec. The artist learned her skills from her mother and grandmother. Age—probably 1960-70’s. This basket is in excellent condition with no breaks and is identified by the characteristic woven finial An investment level basket.
